Frerick den Haan's masterpiece 'Les Heures du Jour' (Four Times of the Day) is a suite of four brand new compositions for solo piano named after the poster tetralogy by Alphonse Mucha. Heavily inspired by Ravel's 'Daphnis et Cloë Suite' and 'Une barque sur l'océan' (Miroirs), 'Les Heures du Jour' proves that impressionism still has new paths to explore and thus is still relevant today.
The decision to create a impressionistic suite comes from multiple inspiration sources. First of all, he fell in love a long time ago with the impressionistic approach where colouring the music seemed much more important rather than the focus on melody. The French composer Maurice Ravel seemed to have a great influence on Frerick's composing style throughout this suite.
Secondly, he recently visited a Mucha exhibition where he saw the four posters. Beautifully illustrated it reminded him of an alternate take on 'Vivaldi' Four Seasons'. While Ravel and Mucha were contemporaries and both lived and worked in Paris, they never met. Thus, also inspired by the fairytale illustrations of Mucha, Frerick decided to (in their honour) bring them together in a new piece of art. The artwork from the record is the actual tetralogy brought in new dotted perspective by illustrator Sanne Sprengers (NL). The suite has been pressed on 10' inch vinyl as a limited edition.
